Despite the interest which the West has felt for China since at least the 13th с A.D. and the voyages of Marco Polo, sinology remains a young discipline. Among specialists of early China, who remain few in numbers compared to those working on modern China, the division of history into separate and autonomous areas emphasizing art and philosophy to the exclusion of politics, lends itself to the acceptance of early Chinese historical writings as indisputable truth.
