Jeux et enjeux politiques internationaux au IIe siècle avant J.-C.

Tite-Live (XLV, 32, 1 à XLV, 33, 5) and Polybe (XXX, 25 à 26) mention games celebrated in the interval of few months in 168 and 167 b.C. by Aemilius Paullus, Roman general, at Amphipolis in Macedonia and by Antiochos IV, king of Syria, in Daphne, while Roman imperialism, extented to Macedonia and to Asia, was contraried by the international political ends of Antiochos. In this study the author analyses how «celebrate games» in the international political context of the second century before Christ took place in the political strategy of states who utilised them as psychological arm and as propaganda. Aemilius Paullus gave typicaly Greek games without gladiatoral fights and "venationes", which were typicaly Roman games, and he didn't give them in Rome but in the metropolis of the first "regio" of Macedonia, which he had just subjugated, because the senat and he tried to have adhesion of Greeks and asiatic kingdoms to their political and ideological views. In the same way in order to reply and to compete with Aemilius Paullus'games, Antiochos gave his own in Daphne but still more magnificent and exceptionally long with Italian and Roman ones, gladiatorial fights and "venationes". But the festival was not opened by the ritual and traditional "pompa", but by an impressive defile of Antiochos'troops. Thus the king braved the implicit warning and threat contents in the Aemilius Paullus' games opposite to him and he showed to the Greek and to the asiatic kingdoms, stakes of this rivalship, that they must fear him if they were not his friends but tranquillized if they courted his friendship.Deux textes, l'un de Tite-Live, "Histoire de Rome", XLV, 32, 8, 11 et 33, 1, 6, l'autre de Polybe, "Histoires", XXX, 25, 1 à 26, 1, font état de jeux donnés à quelques mois d'intervalle en 168 et en 167 par Paul-Emile, général romain, et par Antiochos IV, roi de Syrie, alors que Rome et la Syrie rivalisaient pour étendre leur zone d'influence sur le monde grec et sur les royaumes d'Asie. Cette étude montre que «donner des jeux» au IIème s.av. J.C. faisait partie de la stratégie politique des états qui les utilisaient comme arme psychologique et comme moyen de propagande. Paul-Emile donnait des jeux de type grec à l'exclusion de jeux italiens et romains - les combats de gladiateurs et les "venationes" - et il ne les donnait pas à Rome mais dans la capitale de la première des "regiones" de la Macédoine qu'il venait de soumettre, parce qu'il recherchait l'adhésion des Grecs de la Péninsule et d'Asie et qu'il voulait aussi leur donner un avertissement concernant le choix de leurs alliances. De la même façon et en réponse aux festivités de Paul-Emile, Antiochos IV donnait les siennes à Daphné en surenchérissant dans le faste et la durée. Voulant montrer son savoir-faire agonistique il donnait des jeux italiens et romains, combats de gladiateurs et "venationes", et défiant la puissance militaire romaine, il faisait défiler ses troupes au cours de la "pompa", voulant aussi signifier aux Grecs qu'ils devaient le craindre s'ils n'étaient pas ses alliés et qu'ils pouvaient se rassurer s'ils devenaient ses amis.Bouley Elisabeth.
