The creation of airline flight schedules is a complex process, with the objective of maximizing profits and resource utilization. Flight schedules are, therefore, often tight and have little or no capacity to deal with frequent disruptions. Tight flight schedules lead to flight delays and poor on-time performance, which can be costly for airlines and inconvenient for passengers. The airlines strive to develop robust flight schedules by adding time buffers or re-timing flights to address this problem.
