A discrete event simulation model to explore resource allocation at Iceland’s new National hospital

The thesis goes into detail on the process that goes into constructing a reliable discrete event simulation model with historical and empirical data, data analysis and modelling with MATLAB and SimEvents. The final model demonstrates how performance metrics are affected by increased arrivals of patients and also simulates which imaging modalities would be most beneficial to add. The results indicate that, with the current setup, an increase of 50% in patient arrivals would lead to roughly 5 times the average space needed for waiting areas as well as on average 3 more radiologists on duty. Additionally the model suggests that adding a digital radiography machine would lead to the largest decrease in average queue waiting times, however increasing the demand for radiologists the most. These results lay the groundwork for a potential cost-benefit analysis for future healthcare management decisions
