Abstract Local Power and Changes at the State Level: The Case of a Bariba Village. — To examine how changes in national politics affect the local level, an approach is used that contrasts with the classical methods of political science, which focuses on macropolitical relations between state and society. The major hypothesis herein is that peasants formulate their own political culture in response to national changes. As this local history of the village of Tebo in Northern Benin shows, the phases of political history perceived by the village do not correspond to the phases in national politics.
