Marmi e splendor nei palazzi imperiali del Palatino. Trasformazioni del linguaggio architettonico e dell’uso dei marmi colorati

With this contribution we want to highlight the relationships between the Neronian and the Flavian periods in Rome in the field of architectural language. From our works it emerged that after the Neronian fire that led to intense building activity in Rome, new trends emerged in the field of architectural sculpture: in particular, a greater use of chiaroscuro obtained with a drill and a more intense effects of light while not neglecting the search for plastic and, if possible, naturalistic effects. To illustrate what has been said, we have reproduced some capitals of the Domus Aurea. In the Flavian age and above all the Domitian period, in accordance with thevision of the power that this emperor had, a new architectural style was created in Rome that summarizes what was already emerging in the Neronian age. We have therefore analyzed some elements such as capitals and cornices in order to better highlight this assumption. In the study of the two periods we were able to underline the importance of the Vespasian period which is well documented by the monuments of Tarragona and then of Rieti, where the emperor was born, as it testifies to an important phase in which new stylistic instances are affirmed, which overcome, by synthesizing and passing on the experiences of the past in new formulas.We also briefly dealt with the theme of the color of marble in the columns and wall coverings. The wider and more varied use of colored marbles also led to a search for new quarries, especially in Egypt, and also the emergence of a new aesthetics based on the experience of the past.Con questo contributo vogliamo evidenziare i rapporti tra il periodo neroniano e quello flavio a Roma nel campo del linguaggio architettonico compreso i marmi colorati di rivestimento. Dai nostri lavori è risultato che dopo l’incendio neroniano che ha determinato un’intensa attività edilizia a Roma, si sono profilate tendenze nuove nel campo della scultura architettonica: in particolare già si delinea un maggiore uso del chiaroscuro ottenuto col trapano e uno sfruttamento più intenso degli effetti della luce pur non tralasciando la ricerca di effetti plastici e se possibile anche naturalistici. Per illustrare quanto detto abbiamo riprodotto alcuni capitelli della Domus aurea. In età flavia e soprattutto nel periodo domizianea, in accordo con la visione del potere che aveva questo imperatore, si crea a Roma un nuovo stile architettonico che riassume quanto già si stava profilando in età neroniana. Abbiamo quindi analizzato alcuni elementi quali capitelli e cornici per poter meglio mettere in evidenza tale assunto. Nello studio dei due periodi abbiamo potuto evidenziare l’importanza del periodo vespasianeo che ci è ben documentato dai monumenti di Tarragona e poi di Rieti, presso cui l’imperatore era nato, in quanto ci testimonia un’importante fase in cui si affermano nuove istanze stilistiche, che superano, sintetizzandole, tramandando le esperienze del passato in nuove formule. Inoltre abbiamo brevemente trattato il tema del colore del marmo nelle colonne e nei rivestimenti parietali. L’uso più ampio e variegato dei marmi colorati determinò anche una ricerca di nuove cave soprattutto in Egitto, e anche l’affermarsi di una nuovaestetica fondata sull’esperienza del passato
