Jean Nsonde — Christianity and Traditional Religion among the Kongo during the 17th and 18th Centuries. This research studies the perception that Kongo-speakers, whether in the Kongo or Kakongo, had of missionaries and of Christianity's semantic contents, in particular of practices such as baptism. In turn, it focuses on Christian clerics' views of Kongo traditional religion. Parallel to this study of how the two communities saw each other, attention is paid to the various ways missionaries fought against the nganga. In this politically important struggle, religious supremacy was at stake, as well as the legitimation of those who wielded power.Nsondé Jean.
