Philip Augustus. The eschatological king? Philip Augustus' reign is undoubtedly one of the most important turning point for the Capetian monarchy. Well known are Philip' politic, military and administrative successes. But during his reign also the royal ideology of 13th and 14th century Capetian monarchy emerges, often called the "royal religion ". Since he was born, Philip was called "Dieudonné" (God's gift), and the analysis of the chronicles (Rigord of Saint-Denis) and texts issued from Philip Augustus' chancellery (Etienne de Gallardon) reveals the vision of royalty deeply influenced by the eschatological ideas.
