Simulation of the whole spunbond process for the production of nonwovens poses several computational challenges. The process can be split into various steps: the melt flow inside the spinneret, the melt behavior inside and directly under the capillaries, the ongoing spinning process, the entanglement of the fibers induced by turbulent air flow, as well as the fiber laydown. During the last years several dissertations, studying the different steps of the spunbond process, have been realized in close cooperation with Fraunhofer ITWM and universities. We first present a short overview of all research work and later present further details on three individual projects: optimal melt flow, viscous jets and fiber-wall interaction
