The town of Agbomè and its countryside or suburbs, generically called Agbogudo, developed on a plateau of "terre de barre", a clay soil that the various occupants of the site used for various purposes. Agriculture, in various forms, was the first activity practiced by the population. Alongside this, there were many other professional occupations: the manufacture of pottery and pipes (ceramics), and mainly metallurgical activity. The men and women involved came from a variety of backgrounds.
