Surveying practice involvement in providingvocational skills training for undergraduatebuilding surveyors : the ICZ way

The paper starts from a documented premise ofthere being a critical shortage of skilled buildingsurveyors. It also uses a researched premise thatall stakeholders to building surveying educationfavour the incorporation of vocational skills trainingalongside academic instruction. This creates graduatesalready possessing of core vocational skillsand a knowledge of practice. The question posedis whether practice themselves can assist in thisskills transfer, or whether it should be left whollyto specialist educators to devise ways of deliveringsuch knowledge. A fortunate opportunity whichallows the author to evaluate two identical activitiesof dilapidations surveying undertaken by thesame learners, in the same academic period, underidentical conditions, with one facilitated and leadby a specialist surveying tutor as an industrialsimulation and the other facilitated and lead bya current practitioner, on a current dilapidationsinstruction. Findings tend towards a belief thatpractice reaching out to assist educators is a worthwhileway that any future skills shortages can beaddressed through graduates entering practice withgreater experience of vocational practices and skills
