Against the backdrop of the Council’s approval for public consultation on language requirementsreview, we examine the assumptions behind language tests to establish language proficiency forregulatory purposes. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) stipulates that any overseas trainednurse must not pose an unnecessary threat to patient safety, due to language insufficiency and anyease in the language requirements should be met with caution. Therefore, it is prudent to examinewhether the tests used are counter-intuitive to their purpose and whether lowering of test scoreslowers the NMC regulatory standards
