This is a literary—critical study of three twentieth-century poets seen in relation to a continuous development of the English poetic tradition from Romanticism to what is approximately termed ’Modernism’. It traces the emergence of a particular group of poetic obsessions involving an intensely subjective striving for ’totality of self’, as well as a sense of a chasm between the poet and the world around him and the need to bridge this chasm. The battle of poets with style and technique in the earlier part of the century was a necessary accompaniment to the authentic expression of these obsessions.
