Sustainability has grown to become a major body of knowledge in tourism research (Espiner et al., 2019) since the advent of the first definition of sustainable development, coined by the United Nation’s Brundtland Commission Report (WCED, 1987). In 2005, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) developed a definition for sustainable tourism that used the three pillars of sustainable development as a framework – the economy, society, and the environment.
