Foraminifera are an important component of the benthic deep-sea fauna whose distribution and occurrence mainly depends on the availability of food and oxygen concentration. Most deep-sea foraminifera depend on organic matter as food source which was produced in the photic zone of the oceans and has sunk to the sea floor. The flux of organic matter varies strongly with water depth but also on a seasonal scale. Deposits of fresh phytodetritus on the sediment floor in the deep sea after a strong spring production are a temporarily limited food source whose effect on the benthic deep-sea community has only scarcely been investigated so far.
