The quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the supplying blood vessels and the local capillary density in the visual cortex of macaques and squirrel monkeys, as well as the relationship of vascular density and oxidative metabolic capacity were the main topics of this thesis. Two publications showed locally different capillary densities and their correlation to the activity of the oxidative metabolism. The organization of the blood supply of the brain was investigated using a variety of different techniques. On the basis of corrosion casts, the morphology, the amount and the distribution of the supplying arteries and the draining veins was described.
