In positron emission tomography (PET) emission density images are formed by photon coincidence measurements. This process is complicated, particularly with regard to the photons that can be scattered in the inhomogeneous patient. A method to incorporate Monte Carlo simulations into the image formation process to model the scattering is presented. This is achieved by simulating the system matrix that describes the map from emission density to detected coincidences. The problem of the very large size of the matrix is met by fitting and B-spline compression of Monte Carlo results.
