The paper identifies communication protocols and technologies which can be used in the green, yellow and red phases defined by the BDEW (German association of water and energy supply and distribution). The role of communication in distribution networks and in the three phases is outlined first. On the basis of some selected use cases, the requirements for the selection of appropriate communication protocols and technologies are then studied.
