Die Dissertation untersucht Konrad Maurers Reisebericht, welchen er nach seiner Reise nach Island im Jahre 1858 verfasste. Den Kern der Arbeit bildet dabei die Analyse des Textes. Eingeleitet wird diese durch eine biographische Übersicht zu Konrad Maurers Leben und Werk, Fakten zur Reise selbst und den Manuskripten, eine Einordnung seines Berichts innerhalb der Islandreiseberichte seiner Zeit sowie eine Diskussion des Gattungsbegriffs „Reisebericht“ selbst. Die Analyse befasst sich mit den Wechselwirkungen des Reisens und Schreibens, den Zeitebenen des Reiseberichts, dem Reisebericht als „inszeniertes Erfahrungsmodell“ (O.
