The ependyma is a single-layered epithelium lining the ventricles of the brain and the central canal of the spinal cord. Its prominent cell type are the ependymocytes that bear a bundle of kinocilia at their apical surface projecting into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Despite ependymal cells were already described in 1836 their specific roles in health and disease are not yet precisely understood. An approach elucidating ependymal functions is the identification of genes that are selectively transcribed in the ependyma but not in the remaining brain parenchyma.
