The main goals of this work were the design, synthesis, and characterization of new functional polyphenylene dendrimers. Polyphenylene dendrimers are highly branched, monodisperse macromolecules consisting exclusively of benzene rings. They can be obtained in high yield by a repetitive Diels-Alder cycloaddition - deprotection protocol. Their shape-persistent dendritic scaffold allows to obtain nanoparticles with functional groups in defined relative orientation. In the first chapter polyphenylene dendrimers with a pyrene core are presented.
