Two different approaches were undertaken toward preventing manufacture of homemade explosives (HME\u27s). To inhibit the synthesis of currently used HME\u27s, fundamental understanding of the chemistry involved was initially studied, followed by attempts to denature commonly available chemicals used. In order to determine which materials pose a threat as HME\u27s a test was developed to screen materials on a small-scale. Conditions which result in the formation of triacetone triperoxide (TATP) or diacetone diperoxide (DADP) from acetone and hydrogen peroxide (HP) have been studied.
