Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex diagnosis due in part to the heterogeneity among individuals with the disorder. Attempts have been made to develop subtypes within the classification in order to guide treatment and research with this population. An earlier study by this author suggested that subtypes could be identified among hospitalized female adolescents with BPD. While this population has a reputation for having difficult hospitalizations, earlier findings suggested that a small behaviorally problematic subgroup may be responsible for this negative reputation.
