Conserving the Balance: Frank Herbert\u27s DUNE as Propaganda examines Herbert\u27s masterpiece work of science fiction literature as a form of propaganda. It evaluates the source of the propaganda, the avenues of dissemination of the propagandistic elements, and the successes and failures of the attempts at propagandizing. The first chapter is devoted to a short history of American twentieth century science fiction with a longer section devoted to the various literary criticisms of the genre. The criticisms cover a period from the early 1950s until the early 1990s and range from a general view of the genre and its legitimacy as literature to specific criticisms, such as American heroic, mythic, and feminist.
