There is a widespread tendency to classify clinical, practical, social change studies as applied and therefore atheoretical work, in contrast to research which is meant to develop and test concepts, hypotheses, and theories. I believe that this view is incorrect. The significance of the development of a clinical sociology will lie, as does all clinical research, in its conjoined contribution to theory and practice - to theory developed in practice and toughened by use, and to practice informed by theory.
