The conceptual and methodological strengths of On winning some and losing some are identified and the pedagogical value of the approach taken by Hawley and Little is commended. This research extends developmental researchers\u27 understanding of social dominance, and should serve to revive the study of it. Questions unanswered in the study concern the validity of adult caregiver perceptions of social dominance, the relation between competition hierarchies and hierarchies based on directed agonism, and the relation between social dominance and social competence in young children
