Rob van Tulder surveys the Netherlands economic potential. The Netherlands is the home-base of a significant number of very big multinationals. But the relationship between the Dutch government and ‘her’ multinationals is not always smooth and sometimes even a love-hate-relationship. Nevertheless, it has stimulated the creativity of Dutch policy makers and therefore has yielded considerable results. The Netherlands need a smart government which is able to deal effectively - at home as well as in Europe - with the sometimes contrasting interests of states and multinationals
