Keramische matrix composieten

The toughening of brittle ceramic material is possible by the introduction of a second solid (ceramic) phase. A ceramic composite material is formed by the introduction of particles, platelets, whiskers or continuous fibers. The different methods to manufacture ceramic composites are reviewed. The Chemical Vapour Infiltration process however, is explained in greater detail. Ceramic composites have applications in aerospace, gasturbines, engines, heat exchangers and other high temperature structural applications. Both fiber and matrix properties and more important the interface between them, determine the mechanical properties of the composite material. The various interface conditions which have to be fulfilled are summarized briefly. Continuous fiber reinforced composites exhibit the highest fracture toughness although they are more expensive as compared with the discontinuous composites. Whisker reinforcement enhances high bending strength. The toxidity of the whiskers however, prevents applications to high extents
