The toughening of brittle ceramic material is possible by the introduction of a second solid (ceramic) phase. A ceramic composite material is formed by the introduction of particles, platelets, whiskers or continuous fibers. The different methods to manufacture ceramic composites are reviewed. The Chemical Vapour Infiltration process however, is explained in greater detail. Ceramic composites have applications in aerospace, gasturbines, engines, heat exchangers and other high temperature structural applications.
