Platelets play crucial role in hemostasis and thrombosis and their improper function can lead to either bleeding tendencies or occlusive thrombus formation. Applying an in vitro flow chamber technique, the role of platelets in regulation of thrombus formation was investigated in interaction with the blood plasma, leukocytes and vessel wall components in order to better understand the underlying mechanisms. This effort led to the identification of altered platelet functions in immune deficient patients and genetically modified mice.
