Obesity results in several health problems, the most important of these being diabetes mellitus type 2. In patients with morbid obesity (BMI > or = 35 kg/m(2) and comorbidity or BMI > or = 40 kg/m(2)) in particular, prevention or treatment of health problems resulting from the obesity is only possible with considerable and lasting weight loss. Gastric reduction surgery with the adjustable gastric band has been shown to be safe and effective. This is also true for the more invasive techniques such as the gastric bypass and the biliopancreatic diversion.
