This paper provides a summary, overview and synthesis of the findings of the second phase of the AFD/Maastricht Graduate School of Governance research project on institutions and economic growth. The point of departure for this research project is that the diversity of longrun patterns of economic growth and development can only be fully understood if one incorporates institutions, institutional diversity and institutional change into the analysis of economic development
