Synaptic impairment might precede neuronal degeneration in Parkinson's disease. However, the intimate mechanisms altering synaptic function by the accumulation of presynaptic alpha-synuclein in striatal dopaminergic terminals before dopaminergic death occurs, have not been elucidated.
