Background Wildfires are increasing in frequency and severity in many regions of the world. Wildfires, like other biomass combustion processes, produce large amounts of smoke which degrades air quality and causes many adverse population health impacts. Current practices in Australia and elsewhere, to reduce the risk of future wildfires, include deliberate burning of the landscape (known as prescribed burning or hazard reduction burning), also potentially producing large amounts of smoke, and affecting human health. Yet the burden of smoke – from wildfires and prescribed burns - are seldom considered when assessing the trade-offs between these two types of landscape burns.
