Photograph originally appeared in 'Swinburne News', Autumn 2001.Mr John Wing and his sister, Grace Guest, pictured during a visit to Swinburne in late 2000. Mr Wing was a carpentry apprentice studying at Swinburne when he wrote to the 1956 Olympic Games Organising Committee suggesting changes to the Closing Ceremony at the Melbourne Olympic Games. His suggestion, that all atheletes join in the Closing Ceremony as one Olympic nation, heralded the beginning of a new Olympic tradition. The involvement of the athletes marked the first time in world history that all nations, regardless of race, religion, colour or politics, joined together as one united nation
