The impact of Brazilian military government on the development of TV in Brazil

[O]ne cannot closely examine the development of Brazilian television in this or other fields during the last 15 years without studying the military regime's objectives and its influences on all sectors of the Brazilian society. Consequently, it is important to say that, within a perspective of the influence of the military in Brazil, this study tries to identify some of the effects of the 1964 military regime on the growth of Brazilian television through its influence on the regulatory process, and on political and socioeconomic development. In order to do that, a basic research question and four operational questions were formulated at the time our work started. They are: Research question: What are the primary factors which directly or indirectly influenced the development of Brazilian television? Operational questions: 1) What are the military influences on the development of Brazilian television? 2) Is the development of Brazilian television a result of the regulatory agencies and communication policies created by the government? 3) Is the growth of Brazilian television the result of the political influences? 4) Is the development of Brazilian television the result of the economic situation of the country? These questions were formulated in order to outline a broad view of the development of Brazilian television within its present environment, as well as to serve as a framework for future research on the topic. In Brazil and abroad, there are countless isolated studies about the political, military, economic, or social conditions of the country during the last 30 years, but none of them are related to television.
