The objective of this research was to optimize the integrated design of internal cooling and film cooling configuration for a gas turbine airfoil. Various film cooling hole geometries were tested with appropriate co-flow and counter-flow channel feed configurations in the wind tunnel facility. The results showed that X-AOpt hole, a shaped film cooling hole which had been previously developed in our laboratory using a computational adjoint optimization technique, outperformed all other geometries in adiabatic effectiveness. In terms of peak performance, X-AOpt hole was able to perform 70% better than the reference 7-7-7 hole.
