In January 1129, the Council of Troyes consecrated the birth of the first military religious order of Christianity, the Order of the Temple, dedicated to the defense of the Crusader States. In its wake, the order of the Knight Hospitallers of Saint John, initially providing care to pilgrims and sick people in Jerusalem, made this fundamental change and became militarized in the 1130s. To support the front of the permanent war between the Crusader States and the Ayyubid and then Mamluk Sultanates and to finance their multiple castles and their garrisons, the Templars and the Hospitallers developed an original institution, the commandery.
