L’écriture philosophique comme modalité d’écriture réflexive

International audienceVarious works in education reveal the importance of writing for "thinking and learning" (Chabanne & Bucheton, 2002). It is "a writing of discovery, of elaboration, a complex writing that accompanies and allows the construction of knowledge." (Crinon, 2000, editorial). The very nature of philosophy, always under construction, naturally "intermediate", never really completed, seems particularly favourable to this practice of reflective writing. Moreover, getting teachers to make students write philosophically commits them to recognizing and promoting them as "writing subjects," that is, singular people with a history, emotions, and a meaningful commitment to what they say or do, and who, in order to do so, think, communicate with their pen or keyboard (...). [It is] "a matter of [helping him or her] to think, to think himself, to invent and at the same time to find [his or her] place." (Bucheton, 2014, p.11). In philosophy, more than elsewhere the teacher is led to consider the student as a valid interlocutor. In philosophy more than anywhere else writing is a tool to build oneself.Finally, because success in learning to write requires a wide range of postures (Ibid.), the practice of philosophical writing, which by its instructions invites the students "to move them, to deepen them, to put the work back on the drawing board in order to 'rethink' them, to rewrite them" (Ibid. p.113), seems particularly well suited: it gives pride of place to the ludicrous-creative, reflexive and, why not, refusal postures of the students. This contribution proposes to present a research in progress, carried out within the framework of a doctoral thesis, concerning the practices of philosophical writing with children from 9 to 12 years old (cycle 3 in France). In addition to the study of the conditions of possibility of an early teaching/learning of philosophical writing as such (as a new genre), it is a question of studying the forms, the interest and the repercussions of a practice of reflective writing preceding a discussion with a democratic and philosophical aim (Tozzi, 2011), with respect to the one that follows it.As part of a collaborative research project (Desgagné, 2001; Morrissette, 2013), teachers carry out teaching sequences of 6 to 8 sessions articulating written and oral practices. The students are led to experiment with different devices, thought by the teachers to be conducive to leaving the phonographic relationship to writing (Goody, 1979): mental maps, the use of lists and tables, interpretative flowcharts (Blond-Rzewuski, 2021), writing with several hands, and the practice of commentary, should enable the students to really seize writing to think. The comparison of these writings with the verbatims of the discussions, reported in the writing after the debate, and the interviews conducted with the students, allow us to measure the impact of these devices. Finally, writing philosophically seems to favour a conception of writing other than the transposition on paper of a prior thought. Philosophical writing manifests itself explicitly as a tool for thinking and learning.Divers travaux en sciences de l’éducation révèlent l’importance de l’écriture pour « penser et apprendre » (Chabanne & Bucheton, 2002). Il s’agit d’« une écriture de découverte, d’élaboration, une écriture complexe qui accompagne et qui permet la construction de connaissances. » (Crinon, 2000, éditorial). La nature même de la philosophie, toujours en construction, naturellement « intermédiaire », jamais vraiment achevée, semble particulièrement propice à cette pratique de l’écriture réflexive. Par ailleurs, amener les enseignants à faire écrire philosophiquement l’élève les engage à le reconnaitre et à le promouvoir comme un « sujet écrivant, « c’est-à-dire une personne singulière avec une histoire, des émotions, un engagement sensé dans ce qu’il dit ou fait et qui, pour ce faire, pense, communique avec son stylo ou son clavier (...). [Il s’agit] « de [l’]aider à penser, à se penser, à inventer et en même temps à trouver [sa] place. » (Bucheton, 2014, p.11). En philosophie, plus qu’ailleurs l’enseignant est amené à considérer l’élève comme un interlocuteur valable. En philosophie plus qu’ailleurs l’écriture est un outil pour se construire.Enfin, parce que la réussite dans l’apprentissage de l’écriture nécessite un large éventail de postures (Ibid.), la pratique de l’écriture philosophique, qui par ses consignes invite les élèves « à les déplacer, les approfondir, à remettre l’ouvrage sur le chantier pour les « repenser », les réécrire » (Ibid. p.113), semble particulièrement adaptée : elle met à l’honneur les postures ludico-créative, réflexive et, pourquoi pas, de refus, des élèves. Cette contribution se propose de présenter une recherche en cours, menée dans le cadre d’une thèse de doctorat, portant sur les pratiques d’écriture philosophique avec des enfants de 9 à 12 ans (cycle 3 en France). Outre l’étude des conditions de possibilité d’un enseignement/apprentissage précoce de l’écriture philosophique en tant que telle (comme genre nouveau), il s’agit d’étudier les formes, l’intérêt et les retombées d’une pratique de l’écriture réflexive précédant une discussion à visée démocratique et philosophique (Tozzi, 2011), en vis-à-vis de celle lui succédant. Dans le cadre d’une recherche collaborative (Desgagné, 2001 ; Morrissette, 2013), des enseignants de CM1, CM2 et 6ème mènent des séquences de 6 à 8 séances articulant pratiques écrites et pratiques orales. Les élèves sont amenés à expérimenter différents dispositifs, pensés par les enseignants comme propices à quitter le rapport phonographique à l’écriture (Goody, 1979) : cartes mentales, usage des listes et des tableaux, organigrammes interprétatifs (Blond-Rzewuski, 2021), écritures à plusieurs mains, pratique du commentaire, doivent permettre aux élèves de se saisir réellement de l’écriture pour penser. La confrontation de ces écrits aux verbatims des discussions, rapportées à l’écriture après débat, et les entretiens menés avec les élèves, permettent de mesurer l’impact de ces dispositifs. Finalement, écrire philosophiquement semble favoriser une conception de l’écriture autre que transposition sur le papier d’une pensée préalable.
