Increase the Nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) to minimize the N pollution while maintaining high crop yield and satisfactory quality at harvest is essential for the development of sustainable agriculture. A better consideration of the spatial and temporal variability of N requirements would allow to adapt N fertilizer rate in space and time to match crops’ demand to increase N recovery. Knowledge of the crop's N status during growth should therefore make it possible to improve fertilisation practices.
