Portrait of Fra Teodoro of Urbino as Saint Dominic by Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516). Dating to 1515, the portrait is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England, and is currently on loan to the National Gallery, London, England. Painted near the end of the artist\u27s life, it may have been intended as a portrait of Fra Teodoro who, as a Dominican, would have identified himself with the founder of his religious Order. Alternatively, Fra Teodoro may have served as the model for the painter. Giovanni Belliniwas an Italian Renaissance painter, probably the best known of the Bellini family of Venetian painters. His father was Jacopo Bellini, his brother was Gentile Bellini, and his brother-in-law was Andrea Mantegna. He is considered to have revolutionized Venetian painting, moving it towards a more sensuous and colouristic style. Through the use of clear, slow-drying oil paints, Giovanni created deep, rich tints and detailed shadings.
