Dayas Quinoni, la peste noire et la tallia judeorum

International audienceThis article addresses one again the history of the Jews in Provence at the time of the Black Plague after the seminal study of Joseph Shatzmiller, published in 1974 on the same topic. It adds new documents, particularly the record of the restitution of precious objects stolen during the sacking of the Jews’ houses of La Baume les Sisteron and many deeds throwing light on the personality of Dayas Quinoni, the man who wrote the account of the slaughter of the Jews of La Baume on a piece of parchment kept in the National Library of Wien. Dayas Quinoni belonged to the group of officials in charge of the collection and the management of the tallia judeorum. In its second part, the article deals with that tax established by Charles I of Anjou and explores the ways of its collection and the modifications introduced during the first part of the fourteenth century in the organization of the “Jews’ com- munity of the counties of Provence and Forcalquier”. Only one document from this administration was preserved. It is an account for the years 1351-1352 written by the syndics of the Jewish community of the royal demesne and sent to the treasurer of the county. It illustrates both the Jews’ sufferings during the plague and the part played at that time by Dayas Quinoni.Cet article rouvre le dossier des juifs de Provence pendant la peste noire ouvert en 1974 par Joseph Shatzmiller dans une étude qui a fait date. Il apporte de nouveaux documents, notamment le procès-verbal de la restitution d’objets précieux dérobés lors du sac des maisons des juifs de La Baume-les-Sisteron et plusieurs actes qui éclairent la figure de Dayas Quinoni qui a rédigé sur un fragment d’un rouleau du Pentateuque, conservé à la Bibliothèque Nationale de Vienne, un récit du massacre des juifs de La Baume. Dayas Quinoni faisait partie des responsables de la collecte et de la gestion de la tallia judeorum. La seconde partie de l’article revient sur cette imposition établie par Charles Ier d’Anjou, sur l’évolution des modalités de sa per- ception et sur les modifications introduites durant la première moitié du xive siècle dans l’organisation de la « communauté des juifs des comtés de Provence et de Forcalquier ». Le seul document conservé provenant de cette administration se situe dans le temps de la peste : ce compte, rendu par les syndics de la communauté des juifs du domaine royal au trésorier du comté pour les années 1351-1352, illustre à la fois les souffrances des juifs pendant la peste et le rôle joué durant cette période par Dayas Quinoni
