Apicomplexa is a phylum of obligate intracellular protozoan parasites responsible for serious diseases in both humans and animals. T. gondii and P. falciparum are notable members of this phylum and possess, like their counterparts, an assortment of exclusive apical secretory organelles (micronemes and rhoptries) that orchestrate their entry into the host cell. Micronemes are involved in motility, attachment, and finally escape from the host cell after parasite replication. Rhoptry proteins act in synergy with microneme proteins to enable invasion and are involved in the hijacking of host functions and the establishment of the parasitophorous vacuole.
