Heavy-ion collisions are a unique opportunity to subject nuclear systems to extreme conditions of pressure, density and charge asymmetry. These dynamic and thermodynamic conditions approach those of nuclear matter found in astrophysical objects such as supernovae explosions, the formation and structure of neutron stars, or the fusion of compact stars. The nuclear matter equation of state is the main tool for the description of such phenomena and it can also describe the dynamical properties and structure of atomic nuclei.
