The Breakers, an 10-acre estate on Ochre Point overlooking the ocean in Newport, Rhode Island, epitomizes the wealth and extravagance of America\u27s Gilded Age. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt for Cornelius Vanderbilt the solid stone Renaissance Revival summer palace was built to replace a wooden cottage (Peabody and Stearns) that burned in 1882. Hunt drew multiple designs for the building, many of which still survive, but ultimately went in a style that drew inspiration from a 16th century Genoese palazzo.https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1222/thumbnail.jp
