Depuis 2011, des échouages récurrents de macroalgues brunes du genre Sargassum causent des problèmes environnementaux, économiques et sanitaires aux Antilles. Ces algues, composées de molécules d’intérêts, sont en voie de valorisation dans divers domaines. En revanche, lors de leur échouage sur les côtes, et à cause de leur forte teneur en eau, elles se dégradent rapidement. Leur stabilisation est donc une étape essentielle dans le processus de valorisation de cette biomasse. Une autre espèce du genre Sargassum, également invasive, prolifère sur les côtes européennes, à savoir S. muticum.
