Metaphor in Gulag literature and the literature of nazi camps : towards the literalisation of metaphor (Charlotte Delbo, Primo Levi et Varlam Chalamov)

Comme son titre l’indique, cette thèse tâche à esquisser une poétique de la métaphore dans un corpus d’œuvres issues des camps de concentration nazis et soviétiques. Si nous sommes à même de parler de métaphores, c’est que nous sommes dotés d’un « fonds commun minimum » de paradigmes en matière de leur reconnaissance, ce que s’attachent à démontrer nos analyses dans la première partie de cette thèse. Cette étape plus taxinomique est indispensable afin d’examiner, dans la deuxième partie, la manière dont le contexte, tant référentiel que verbal, favorise de lectures dé-métaphorisantes en suscitant l’étonnement du lecteur et une plus profonde compréhension de cet univers de violence extrême. Mais le mouvement vers la littérarisation de la figure-trope qu’est la métaphore ne concerne pas uniquement les énoncés localisés, perçus comme métaphoriques à première vue : il s’étend aussi à la fameuse « métaphore de l’enfer ». En prenant pour point de départ les théories selon lesquelles la métaphorisation du réel concentrationnaire par la référence à la représentation « enfer » permettrait de dire l’indicible de ce réel, nous avons tâché à démontrer que les emprunts à l’Enfer de Dante et à d’autres représentations de l’outre-tombe acquièrent, en l’occurrence, une référence directe dans la réalité. Enfin, la constante tension entre le littéral et le non littéral et le mouvement vers la littéralisation du trope qu’est la métaphore ne lui fait pas perdre son effet de multiplication de sens, bien au contraire : l’univers concentrationnaire apparaît sous les traits d’un espace non-humain, où l’homme, soumis à la force inhumaine, devient « une chose au sens le plus littéral » (Simone Weil) et où l’enfer comme représentation acquiert sa pleine puissance. Toutefois, cet enfer sur terre qu’est l’univers concentrationnaire, exemplifié dans cette thèse par Auschwitz et la Kolyma, est aussi, à maints égards, un anti-enfer. À cet enfer autre, correspond un nouveau chronotope littéraire, aussi puissant et aussi intemporel que celui constitué par l’Inferno.ABSTRACT: As its title indicates, this thesis attempts to outline a poetics of metaphor in a body of works from the Nazi and Soviet concentration camps. If we can speak of metaphors, it is because we are endowed with a “minimum common fund” of paradigms in terms of their recognition, which our analyzes endeavor to demonstrate in the first part of this thesis. Finally, the constant tension between the literal and the non-literal and the movement towards the literalization of metaphor does not cause it to lose its meaning-multiplying effect, quite the contrary: the concentration camp universe appears under the features of a non-human space, where man, subjected to inhuman force, becomes “a thing in the most literal sense” (Simone Weil) and where hell as a representation acquires its full power. However, this hell on earth that is the concentration camp universe, exemplified in this thesis by Auschwitz and Kolyma, is also, in many respects, an anti-hell. To this other hell corresponds a new literary chronotope, as powerful and as timeless as that constituted by the Inferno
