Universities are acknowledged to play a critical role within their societies. With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the ascendency of neoliberalism, the role the university plays within society is undergoing a substantial change. In most western jurisdictions, the public university has been restructured to have a governing board composed of both internal and external governors. The governing board provides oversight of the university as a public funded corporation. Within Canada, the majority (usually by one) of the university governing board members are appointed by the state.
