The rainforests of North America are recognized for supporting some of the world’s most noteworthy experiments in conservation-based management. This study analyzes the structure and effectiveness of a relatively new approach to the conservation of biodiversity – ecosystem-based management, and provides recommendations as to how the province of B.C. can effectively promote the preservation of biodiversity, while balancing the needs of society. This is explored through a comparative analysis of the habitat and socio-economic conditions of three rainforests located on the pacific coast of North America, including the Tongass National Forest, the Great Bear Rainforest, and Clayoquot Sound.
