Die Herstellung von Kegelrädern erfolgt traditionell mit Spezialwerkzeugen. Durch die aus dem Herstellungsprozess resultierenden Zwangsbedingungen müssen Einschränkungen an die Abrollgeometrie der Zahnräder in Kauf genommen werden. Die Freiformherstellung mittels Universalmaschinen ermöglicht es dagegen erstmals mit einer hinreichenden Genauigkeit eine beliebige Zahnradgeometrie zu erzeugen. Es stellt sich nun ganz natürlich die Frage nach einer vollständigen geometrischen Analyse der Abrollung und einer darauf aufbauenden expliziten Berechnung der Verzahnungsprofile.
