GEORGIA WINS REGIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION

Friday, November 16, 2001 WRITER: Heidi Murphy, 706/542-5172, hmurphy@uga.edu CONTACT: Kellie Casey, 706/542-2739, krcasey@uga.edu GEORGIA WINS REGIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION ATHENS, Ga. - Recently the University of Georgia School of Law\u27s National Moot Court team secured another trip to New York City to compete in the final rounds of the National Moot Court competition by winning its regional competition in Atlanta. UGA\u27s winning team, comprised of third-year students Emily Hammond, Clint Pridgen, and Jeffrey Ward, beat teams from the law schools in the southeast region. UGA defeated local rivalries of Georgia State and Emory during the final rounds of the regional championship to secure their trip to New York. Another honor was bestowed on Pridgen as he was selected Best Oralist. This is Pridgen\u27s second best oralist honor. He was chosen Best Oralist in last year\u27s regional of the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition. UGA School of Law Dean David Shipley is delighted with the team\u27s achievements this year. Kellie Casey, our advocacy director, has worked very hard with the law school\u27s advocacy teams and it shows. It looks like we will have to build a new trophy case for all of the awards we are winning, he said. The trip to New York will be UGA\u27s ninth trip in 11 years to compete in the national championships. The School of Law was successful in bringing home the top trophy on two of these trips. Kellie Casey believes the team is poised to perform well in the national competition to be held in January. We will be working hard to build on our success thus far to try to bring home the national trophy once again, she said. This win also comes on the heals of defeating the University of Florida in the annual Hulsey-Kimbrell competition in late October. #
